Martin began his manufacturing career by making reproduction Scrimshaw: bone objects (often teeth & tusks) etched with pictures of nautical subjects & heroic figures (carved by sailors as a way of passing the time on long voyages).
During this period I was an illustrator in London - spending much of my time creating 'scraperboard' illustrations - an effect which simulates wood engraving and is not dissimilar to the illustrations which appear on scrimshaw.
Early in 2004, after Fragile World had got going, Martin suggested we try making some 'new' Scrimshaw style objects.
Instead of tusks & bones he suggested some smooth aquiline animals might be more interesting.
Five animals were made and trialed in a number of finishes.
I suggested the name 'Spindrift'.
The project was shelved upon Martin's retirement & no release is scheduled.
