Cat & Moon

110mm (4.25") high x 90mm (3.5") wide

A 'map of the Moon' has apparently been recently found in an ancient tomb in Ireland - the dark areas of the 'seas' are clearly marked and correspond most faithfully to those in the heavens.

How man has woven stories around the moon as he has stared up at the heavens from cottage door, a ship becalmed at sea, a landscape still beneath the snow.

Many have believed there to be a 'Man in the Moon' - perhaps an interpretation of the light and dark areas does suggest a face - others say it is a whole figure that can be seen. One story has the figure condemned to exile on the moon for having collected sticks on the Sabbath day - and it is maintained he is there with his bundle and his faithful dog, whom some call Gelert.

Others would have the moon to be a manifestation of Diana the Moon Goddess (brother to the Sun God Apollo) and bringer of fertility. Others still as a thing of wonder and beauty:

'A rainbow comes and goes,
And lovely is the rose.
The moon doth with delight
Look about her when her heavens are bare.
Waters on a starry night are beautiful and fair.'

[Wordsworth]

These castings are designed, sculpted and manufactured in England, using resin-bonded marble, bronze and Cotswold stone. Modern moulding techniques faithfully reproduce the intricate and painstaking work of the sculptor whilst giving the appearance of real carved stone or sculpted terracotta. The resin sculptures are weatherproof, the plaques having a hole drilled in the back for easy hanging
